640 people, one lake

The whole school walked round Lyngby lake to start the year. Nobody fell in, which is a first.

Every year since 1964, the school has started with a walk round the lake. This year all 640 children and 78 staff set off from the jetty at nine, in drizzle that turned to sunshine by the halfway point.

Everyone together

The lake walk is the one morning when stages mix completely. Each Year 11 student walks with a child from Early years, and they stay partners for the year. Some of those pairs still meet up at reunions.

A few numbers

  • 7.4 kilometres, the full loop
  • 3 hours and 10 minutes for the slowest group, who stopped to count swans
  • 41 swans, according to them
  • 1,200 cinnamon buns, baked by the kitchen at five in the morning

Thank you to the parents who walked with us and to the kommune for closing the path to bikes. See you next August.
